Today was officially my last day as the intern, and in two weeks or so it will be my first day as a paid design assistant. It was really quiet today. Judy came back from the New York Gift Show with more orders as well as presents! she gave me a beautiful pair of earings. Today was very quiet, very cool- Judy was on the phone most of the day so i was by myself which was nice but of course i missed Sarah's beautiful singing voice. It was a shame to hear all those television jingles without her. so HAPPY HAPPY i am going home! working for free is over!

8/16/07

Today was my almost last day- my last day with Sarah. She is going out of town for a wedding and then i am leaving for home and we won't see each other until the second week of september. This might be a struggle for me- since i have seen her 5 days a week for the past many weeks. It was a short day today- just finishing up cutting scarfs with our new rotary blade and getting things all in order before Judy comes back tomorrow.
SO i guess since today is more of like a last day for me i will write up the BIG SUMMARY of what i've learned and everything that's happened to me during this internship. The first goal of this blog was to discuss my responsibilities at the internship and the role that i played. My responsibilities were very lengthy- basically everything. Although i had a great partner in Sarah. It felt almost natural for Sarah to take the lead most of the time and show me the way, but she was also the one that allowed me to contribute more of my own ideas and let me do things on my own if i said i was ready to. My responsibilities included in the assistance in everything that we did at the studio- silkscreening, designing blankets & t-shirts, cutting fleece & silk for scarfs, working with patterns-particularly the new one i made for our mitten, sewing with the machine & sewing by hand. My role was a design assistant- although i was also counted on for most of our pattern and cutting work.
I first started out at the studio as a follower- basically doing whatever Judy and Sarah wanted me to do or assisting in the projects that Sarah was doing. Now i am doing projects on my own and i have a better idea of how Judy expects things to be. Like how she likes her stars to look and what design elements she won't like. and even if she says she doesn't want something -half the time sarah tells me to still try it and show it to her because she doesnt' always know what she wants. SHe can get stuck in her old designs and although she says she wants new things it's not always the easiest to get her to agree to these new things. So as the new person in the studio she seems to listen to me when i back up Sarah in our opinions- she seems more willing to try new design ideas.
Some of the things that i've learned- including technical and conceptual-most importantly is that when you are working under someone you have to achieve their idea of design. Yes, Judy is always accepting of my ideas but when it comes down to it -it's her name that's on this blanket and she is the one representing it. Even if i don't like how things look or if it's not the same style as i have, i still have to do it-because that's my job. and i don't mind that. i understand what my position and responsibilities are and i understand in the end that Judy is the boss and that i may not be able to make all the designs i want to while i am there but one day when i have moved onto a different studio/internship/company i will be able to do those things. The purpose of this internship was to learn about a local childrens clothing company- and i have. i had no real expectations of this internship other than- is it in the fashion field that i want and is it hands on- which it was. I've learned from Judy that things don't have to be perfect and the flaws in shapes can be their strenghts. As far as technical- Sarah has taught me so much from adobe photoshop and dreamweaver. Now i have a better idea of how to present my images as well as create my own website-which hopefully i will do someday soon. SO i would say all in all this summer internship was really great. I got a new REALLY great friend in Sarah, a very flexible and understanding boss in Judy, AS WELL as a job offer!!!!!

today i accomplished a lot. i convinced judy to buy an olfa cutting board! this way when we cut out all 70 of our new scarfs it will go SO MUCH faster! i have to get them all done before friday (when judy gets back) so that they'll be ready to go to the sewer and will be all done before my last day. my other accomplishment is that today i thought of a new blanket design- and it was all my idea! judy said yes to it but we still have to work on some of the details. i really think a watermelon blanket in pink and chartreuse with black seeds and ants inthe corners would be an interesting baby blanket- but judy doesn't like the ants idea. she said she wanted strawberries but that's too much fruit and not the picture i have in my head. i want to go more for a watermelon pic nic summer theme. So i think we're going to cut it all out with the ants and show it to judy first before she says no again. i really want to get this one made because it would be my design and my idea and i'd like to see it made.
i've also added some of the new blankets sarah and i worked on last week and just got back from hilda. the mint lion one is my favorite!

SO this is the first day of my last week at my internship. It would be a lot more upsetting if i hadn't been offered a job there! now i'm just counting down until the day when i can come into the studio and GET PAID!!!!! Since Judy has been at the New York Gift Fair we have gotten some good reactions from buyers. Today Judy gave us an order for 70 of our womens scarfs- the ones that i model on the website. And since i am the fashion girl of the studio it is MY job to cut out all 70 front and back scarfs. Judy was also saying that she might want to start working on womens coats again so i may be helping her develop a new pattern for that. i'm just glad we have gotten good feedback from our new products- especially the silkscreen designs that sarah and i created. The 1,2,3, chicken is everyones favorite so far, but the BAA sheep is still my favorite. Soon we'll be thinking of new silkscreen designs for our spring line. i've included some images of the studio. it's RIDICULOUSLY dirty but it's a studio- it's meant to be like that. i've also added a photo of sarah because i think she's pretty

First week without Judy has been NICE. today sarah showed me her bikini- i dont think that would happen with Judy around! This week has just been Sarah and I finishing up the rest of the SAME projects hopefully we'll get orders and have something different to do because i have nothing to write about!

Judy is leaving tomorrow for the New York gift show. She'll be showing all of our new scarf, silkscreen & hat designs. So basically for the next two weeks it's just me and Sarah- hopefully we can stay motivated in all this heat. So our projects for the next two weeks are finishing up the nature themed stockings, our bright stockings, and our new blanket ordres. and if all else fails- we clean! the heat was so bad today that we had to leave by 1 just to get out of that studio. When Judy comes back she said we can celebrate my last day by going to the Vogue in Evanston that sells fabric by the bolt for wholesale. As for now i'm just hoping i can get all my hours in and stay focused with this project.

So my internship will be over in about 2 weeks- and then iwill be going home to new mexico! On monday we are going to meet a possible new employee who , funny enough, was in my fashion class and just happened to graduate this year. Sarah didnt' come in today because her car was broken so it was me and Judy for most of the day. I finished the basics for the nature themed stockings-but couldnt' get too far because we are missing our large green thread! you know what that means? it's time to clean. luckily all we have to do for the next two weeks is these nature stockings plus a few other bright colored stockings and then i'm gone. it's nice to know i'll still be able to go back there once school starts- and this time i'll be getting paid! Judy said she would pay me $9/hr which is pretty much awesome since i was going to take a job at the school and they only pay $7.50/hr. Sarah is also going to teach me how to knit and crochet better - i used to be able to knit but now for some reason whenever i cast on it just all goes to shit. so that'll be another thing that i can work on from now on. i'd like to get back into knitting. it's very calming and it's a good skil to know- especially since i'm studying fashion. these next two weeks will be a bit rough. i have to do at least 30 hours a week so hopefully i'll be able to handle it and keep going-without air conditioning!

8/1/07

Today Sarah and i worked on the nature themed stockings all day. We have almost all of the leaves cut out and pinned. Our next step is to embroider the leaves as well as the names (which will be my job!) Sarah also taught me how to use photoshop to enhance the photos we took of the new silkscreened tshits and the takishimaya pillows & blankets. i've spent the last two hours resizing and color balancing and such. some of them are kind of hard to get perfect- since the white balance on sarah's camera is off. obviously i dont know everything so i will have to wait for sarah to finalize them and make them perfect. but i'm going to post one that i think i did a good job on.
Judy has also offered me a job during the school semester. i'll come in for a few hours during the week when i don't have class (monday morning and thursday all day) to help! This couldn't have turned out any better. I'm really looking forward to seeing the transformation from a co-op student to an employee. i know things will be different, since things are always different when money is involved. But i feel like i know enough about Judy's designs and her style to be able to do well.

7/31/07

Sarah and i finished the takishimaya large blankets today. My favorite (as well as Sarah's and Judy's) is the ABC with the three animals. my favorite animals are the giraffe and the elephant but they're the most complicated to work into our designs- but i still fight for them! we're starting to work on a new project. This woman ordered 15 large fleece stockings for her entire family. the only thing is that she doesnt' want them to refrence christmas too much. The theme for our stockings is going to be nature! i've been working on making patterns for the nature designs. We've agreed on mostly different types of leaves- oak and maple mostly. The woman also requested grape vines and olive branches. so i drew some of the leaves to make patterns from but i have to re-work them. they're not quite large enough and so i have to enlarge them and then i'm going to cut them our of the hard pattern brown paper so that we can reuse them over again. i'll post pictures of the stockings once we've made them!

7/23/07

last week judy was gone so sarah and i GOT STRAIGHT TO BUISNESS
we had to finish the takishimaya pillows. we woun't get the ones back thatwe were working on until next saturday but i have a few pictures of the ones we did get back this week.i have included my FAVORITE kitten infant hat that i made and everything! i really wish i could keep it but i know i cant. it must go to new york sadly :( It's also sad that Judy isnt' allowed to sell these products through her company. they are technically owned and made soley for takishimaya. i think there has to be a way that we can still sell something similar to these products through judy herself and not only through takishimaya-hopefully? they are just too good. especially the ABC blankets & pillows.

So today we silkscreened some of our new t-shirt designs for LMNOP in more "sophisticated" colors- pumpkin, burgundy, olive, gold, navy, brown and black. they turned out really really good. sarah will take pictures of them soon- once they are completely done. i really like working with just me and sarah because we're able to work as a team well. we sat down and figured out which designs go with which shirt colors- which were boy , girl, or unisex- which color combinations worked with which design - and i've also gotten really good at knowing how to mix colors. i swear the first time i tried i had to keep asking sarah and it took me about half an hour to get the right shadeof brown. but now i have it in seconds!

7/15/07

TOMORROW we are finishing up our takishimaya orders. AND we get back all the rest of the things i made from the sewer- including my favorite kitten hat! it is absolutely my favorite i will take photos of it. i kind of want to have it but i know that's impossible. I scanned in some of the new silkscreen designs we are doing for our baby and women's t-shirts. Some of the other designs that i don't have scanned images of include a chicken with the numbers 1,2, & 3, a pig with the harlequin border and a P, and a Cow with the number 1 and a C. the BAA is my absolute favorite. We also screenprinter it in darker more sophisticated colors for a different order. It was burgundy, brown, and deep purple on a light purple girls t-shirt. i wish i could make myself one but then again BAA isn't very adult appropriate.

07/13/07

today we made more quilts and pillow designs for takishimaya. our theme is circus animals going to school. my main responsibilities include but are not limited to: sewing on the smiles and gluing the faces! the one we did today was one of my favorite. it was a dog and a bear listening to a lion tell it a story! yes, that's right- they were listening. that way sarah only had to make one book instead of three! and yes laziness and genius go hand in hand. no really though, it looked perfect that way. pretty soon we will be done with takishimaya and be working more on our silkscreened designs- which i lOVE!!!!!

these photos below are from my photoshoot with sarah for our new line of women's scarfs. So not only am i a design assistant but i am also a model on our website! Judy said she really loved the photos and we've already gotten orders from our website for them. i think these are the two best photos out of the 5 total scarfs that we photographed.

07/11/07

I've felt bad lately because i haven't been able to come into the internship very much for the past week because of a sewing job i had with the Early college program. but now it's over! we got back the scarfs that i cut from the sewer. they looked so good! i took photos of them for my portfolio. i also took photos of the one-sies that we made for takishimaya. it's really amazing to see something in it's final stage. it looks so professional! i want one! right now we're getting ready for the new york gift show. but FIRST we're going to clean that studio PROPER

6/25/07

It's been about a week since i first started my internship with judy lichtenstein. i'm actually really loving it. i'm getting to learn more about how to do things myself and figure it out on my own. but i definitely have to note- THANK GOD sarah is there! for the past week i've been doing mostly work with felt and fleece. we've been making scarves, hats, & stockings. what i'm really looking forward to is silkscreening, making up my own compositions with our images, making quilts, and working the arts fair booth. Sarah and i designed an earth quilt. we spent a very long time deliberating about the proper images, positions, and colors- taking into account all the hidden gender meanings behind all. i'll put it up when we have it finished!
